Robots are cool little things that have fueled the imagination of futurists and si-fi buffs for over 50 years. Even had one in the 1939 World's Fair, although that was not much more than an automaton. Similar to the mechanized people in Swiss clocks and the creatures in amusement park fun houses.
Real robots are cool little things that run around in labs, classrooms and places where people can't go. Such as places that are too hazardous for humans to venture, like the bottom of the ocean, inside active volcanoes, poisonous gas leaks, and regions that are too cold or too hot...
Robots in space are practical from a cost perspective when the mission is not much more than delivering payloads for future setup and use. Not much use for a person to hand deliver parts for a space station when there is not enough up there to start bolting sections together.
